Formed in 1994, Ethos is a four-piece rock band and the ongoing project of Detroit singer-songwriter Christian Burke. Over the course of six albums including their latest – 2023’s There Must Be More Than This – ethos have sought to deepen and expand the language of brit-pop, shoegaze, and doo-wop to comport with Burke’s signature wryness and sensitivity. Ethos is an exercise in contrasts – a rhythm section having Motown sensibilities forms the substrate for expansive waves of fuzz laden delay and reverb to burst forth, tempered by the sonorous and dynamic vocal melodies and witty, often darkly humorous turns in lyricism Burke serves up like an impressionistic memoir. Josh Gauntlett (guitar), Erik Mikich (drums), and Kevin Stripling (bass) round out the lineup.
Approximately described as “Rush songs if they were played by members of The Birthday Party”, Troy Gregory & The Mercury Gauntlett is a prog-rock super group consisting of members of The Witches, Detroit Party Marching Band, Ethos, and JETA.
